Frequently Asked Questions
What is therapy?
You may find yourself experiencing symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and/or anger. These are considered “secondary emotions” to deeper feelings such as hurt, pain, or loss. A person’s natural tendency is to use these secondary emotions to protect against experiencing the feelings lying deep within one’s self.
I believe that therapy is a collaborative relationship where we work together to understand those deeper feelings. Through exploration, guidance and questioning, I will help you explore and examine your feelings.
What is the goal of therapy?
The goal of therapy is to gain greater self-awareness and control so that you can enjoy life more fully. The ultimate goal is to help you internalize this process so that you can become your own therapist, and when necessary, you can draw upon these learned skills to further work through problems that arise in the course of living everyday life.
How could I benefit from couple’s therapy?
Couple’s therapy teaches partners how to communicate effectively, work as a team to solve problems, manage conflicts, and in the process develop empathy for each other. The goal is to preserve and enhance love, commitment, and friendship. Couple’s therapy is most effective when both people have a commitment to enhancing the relationship.
What is your orientation?
My philosophy of psychotherapy remains open to new techniques and ideas that could enhance our work together. I integrate many different approaches of therapy depending on what is most beneficial to you and your work. I practice humanistic therapy in which I am active and offer feedback to clients.
